RAJ Restaurant

Raj Restaurant (Raj) was founded on very strong principles encompassing vegetarianism, the beliefs and practices of vegetarians. The word ‘vegetarian’ comes from the Latin word ‘vegetus,’ meaning whole, sound and fresh. True to its founding principles, wholesome, sound and the freshest ingredients are used in magical mixes, by some of the most talented and experienced chefs to bring you some of the most delectable vegetarian food from the Southern and Northern parts of India. For most of its existence, Raj has been specializing in South Indian cuisine. The recent introduction of a wide variety of ‘chaats’ prepared by some immensely talented chefs, has added to the variety of delectable vegetarian fare offered at Raj.

At Raj, attention is also paid to the good health of our patrons. Only the best ingredients are used including healthy cooking oils such as sunflower oil, groundnut oil, sesame oil and olive oil

In our constant effort to promote vegetarianism to our wide spectrum of patrons, ranging from 5 year olds to octogenarians, Raj also offers a range of salivating western vegetarian cuisine. This includes Raj’s famous vegetarian pizzas, prepared with pride and passion using the freshest of cheese, vegetables and other ingredients.

Founder

Sri M.S.K.Rajasubramanian was born on 4th March 1927, in the industrial town of Sivakasi, Tamilnadu, India. He was brought up as a vegetarian by his mother and remained one all his life. Food was his passion, and in spite of being involved totally in the family molasses business, always had an eye for good vegetarian food. The family business took him to various parts of India and in the course of his peregrinations, realised that there was a shortage of good, clean, budget hotels and vegetarian restaurants serving delicious home-made vegetarian food, the kind that his mother would make for him.

He developed a passion for cooking and learnt to cook from his mother, who was an excellent vegetarian cook. In the course of his business travels where good vegetarian food was not available, he would do his own cooking, whenever possible.

The family business brought him to Calcutta, which was then, an entrepot for molasses business. Tired of all the travelling in the molasses business, he decided to turn his passion into a business. With his personal savings, in 1965, he opened a budget hotel and a vegetarian restaurant in Calcutta. Hotel Raj (now called Hotel Homelyraj) and Raj Restaurant was born.

Thus, Raj Restaurant was founded on very strong principles encompassing vegetarianism, the beliefs and practices of vegetarians. The word ‘vegetarian’ comes from the word ‘vegetus’ meaning whole, sound and fresh. True to its founding principles, wholesome, sound and the freshest ingredients are used in magical mixes, by some of the most talented and experienced chefs, to bring you some of the most delectable vegetarian food from the Southern part of India. The recent introduction of a wide variety of ‘chaats’ prepared by some immensely talented chefs, has added to the variety of glorious vegetarian fare offered at Raj.

At Raj, attention is also paid to the good health of our patrons. Only the best ingredients are used, including healthy cooking oils such as sunflower oil, groundnut oil, sesame oil and olive oil.

The food offered at Raj is akin to home-made food and thus the tag line, ‘Come Home to Raj’.
